UNEP Executive Director: Tourism is a victim of climate change, we must take action for this

"Tourism is a victim of climate change," Inger Andersen, the Executive Director of UNEP, said at the High-Level Meeting on Enhanced Action in Tourism within the framework of COP29, APA reports.

"I was very impressed that the COP29 presidency has firmly raised the issue of tourism in the context of climate change for the first time. I think this is important because the emissions gap report tells us that we are not currently heading in the right direction. What we need to see by 2030 is that if we want to keep the temperature rise to 1.5 degrees, we must reduce our emissions by 41%. This gives us five years, but it is only partially achievable," she noted.

Inger Andersen pointed out that the tourism sector is responsible for 8.8% of global emissions, with 70% of that coming from transport. "We must understand this because we travel to beautiful places for enjoyment. And those places always want to remain beautiful. To be clear, tourism is also a victim of climate change, and we must take action for this."
