UNEP: Carbon emissions must be reduced by 41% by 2030

“Our emissions increased by 1.3% in 2023, when they should have fallen. This means that we need to reduce carbon emissions by 41% by 2030, otherwise we will exceed 1.5 degrees,” Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), who spoke at the high-level opening session on multi-level and multi-sectoral climate action at COP29, APA reports.

"Cities carry a significant burden in the context of climate. In fact, just 25 megacities are responsible for 52% of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. This means that the measures you take at home, efficiency standards, energy sources, how you deal with waste and methane emissions, how you deal with public transport, and how you promote electric mobility can have a major impact on the weight of cities in the context of climate change," the UNEP Executive Director noted.

He added that cities are also suffering from the impacts of climate change, which requires that the adaptation measures cities must take be part of urban zoning, planning, and building standards: "Consider nature-based solutions so that you can ensure environmental protection in your cities simply by planting trees and creating parks."
