"The anger of island states is justified, the islands are facing disaster. The island states' experience shows the calamities caused by climate change," UN Secretary-General António Guterres said at the Leaders’ Summit of the Small Islands Developing States on Climate Change held during COP29, APA reports.
The UN Secretary-General emphasized that rapid action must be taken to prevent this: "Such measures serve these purposes. Island states suffer from the consequences of the problems we have created. We consider the creation of a Loss and Damage Fund to be essential. This Fund needs as much funding as the salaries of the top ten football players. In other words, the salary of those football players is enough for the amount needed for this Fund."
He also stressed that trillions of dollars need to be raised to tackle climate change: "This funding should be collected through mechanisms like air travel tariffs and other means. Additional funding should also come from other private funds. I appeal from here. We must extend our support to small island states. The time has come, and we must take action at every level."
