"We are in Azerbaijan, which is honoring our Turkic brothers by chairing COP29," said Murat Kurum, Türkiye’s Minister of Environment, Urbanisation, and Climate Change, at the first meeting of the environment and ecology ministers of the member states of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) within the framework of COP29, APA reports.
He said that the summit will further strengthen the bonds of brotherhood between Turkic states and cooperation in the fight against climate change: "As you know, yesterday we shared Türkiye’s Long-Term Strategy and Roadmap with the world. There we also had the opportunity to express our thoughts and expectations regarding COP29. COP29 is one of the meetings where expectations are highest that real, justified concrete steps will be taken regarding climate change. It is expected and hoped that very critical decisions will be made for countries without access to finance.
There is hope, because we feel the effects of climate change more and more every day. Our world is facing unprecedented dangers, especially in meteorological disasters, in the last 50 years. Over 2 million people have lost their lives as a result of more than 11,000 disasters in the last half century. We have had to endure a global economic loss of 4.5 trillion dollars. But I regret to say that the countries that did not cause climate change or were least to blame for it have been the most affected by these negative situations. And they still face similar difficulties and pain. But the burden of the climate crisis falls on these countries, they cannot benefit sufficiently from the finances. First of all, as Türkiye, we offer humanity a "fairer world" with the strength we receive from our OTS member brothers.
We speak loudly on every international platform and share this with friendly and brotherly countries. In this sense, the Turkic world also demonstrates an extremely active position in contributing to and hosting international platforms.
In particular, I attach great importance on behalf of our countries to the launch of the “Central Asia Climate Dialogue”, which was brought to the agenda by the brotherly country of Uzbekistan at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.”
