It is very important for us to involve young people in the process as participants in climate negotiations, Mukhtar Babayev, the Presidential Representative on Climate Issues of the Republic of Azerbaijan and President of COP29, told APA.
“We will work to ensure that Azerbaijani youth have the necessary skills and opportunities to develop during the green transition period,” Mukhtar Babayev said.
Mukhtar Babayev noted that they will support Brazil's Presidency of COP30 and the Youth Climate Ambassador, as well as work to ensure that young people continue to be at the center of climate action: “Preparations for Brazil are underway, there are many questions. It is necessary to clarify the implementation of many decisions adopted at our COP29. Also, many decisions were adopted at the COPs before COP29. Their implementation is very important.”
Expressing their interest in the full implementation of the decisions taken in Baku, Mukhtar Babayev emphasized that the discussions to be held at COP30 will give impetus to this process: “We have a very good relationship with them, we work as a team. Of course, we will accept the success achieved there as our own success.”
Noting that it is within their mandate to call on donors and international organizations to fulfill their commitments and to ask them for accountability, the COP29 President added that this work is long-term: “This is not a one-day process, but a long-term process, and we raise these issues with countries, banks, and the private sector throughout the year, and we will continue this work.”
