"The holding of the COP29 conference for the first time in a South Caucasus country, Azerbaijan, is a significant event for the region," the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, said during his speech at the COP29 Leaders' Summit, APA's Tbilisi correspondent reports.

In his speech, the government official noted that climate change has severely impacted the economies of developing countries.

“Mr. President, ladies and gentlemen! It is a great honor for me to address you on behalf of Georgia. First of all, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilham Aliyev, as well as to the President of the conference, Mr. Mukhtar Babayev, and the Government of Azerbaijan for their warm hospitality and the contribution to the successful organization of the conference in Baku. This event is significant because, for the first time, a South Caucasus country is hosting the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. I would like to wish Azerbaijan success in achieving efficient and ambitious outcomes in this direction and in fostering cooperation and a spirit of constructive dialogue in the negotiation process. This conference comes at a critical time, as climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time and requires urgent global action and cooperation to address its multifaceted consequences. Unfortunately, armed conflicts on this path not only lead to serious humanitarian crises but also hinder and delay global efforts to combat climate change. The growing effects of climate change, including the rapid melting of glaciers and rising sea levels, are causing severe damage to the economies of developing countries and threatening the livelihoods of particularly vulnerable countries and local communities. Unfortunately, Georgia is no exception and is facing the severe consequences of climate change. In recent years, awareness of the link between human rights and ecology has significantly increased,” the Prime Minister stated.
