"This year, Europe has witnessed serious natural disasters in the space of a few months. Floods have occurred in Central and Eastern Europe, Italy and most recently, unfortunately, Spain. Adaptation must therefore be a key element of urban planning and guide our overall infrastructure approach," said Maja Bakran, Deputy Director-General for Mobility and Transport at the European Commission, APA reports.
She said that transport infrastructure should be adapted to the potential impacts of climate change and that resilience should be increased by prioritizing the effective restoration of transport facilities during disaster recovery.
“In short, good planning is not possible without sound risk assessment, and to be most effective, transport must become a core part of urban climate risk assessment,” the Deputy Director-General added.
