"Tourism has great potential to help address climate change," COP29 President, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Mukhtar Babayev said at the First Ministerial Meeting on Improved Climate Action in the Tourism Sector within the framework of COP29, APA reports.

"Azerbaijan has worked actively to ensure that the voices of all intrerested parties - from governments and international organizations to local communities, businesses, youth and civil society, are reflected at COP29," he said.

Mukhtar Babayev said that the COP29 presidency has adopted a holistic and multi-sectoral approach to climate action, recognizing that solving the climate crisis requires major efforts across multiple sectors: "This vision forms the basis of our Agenda for Action, a comprehensive framework designed to integrate climate action into every aspect of national, regional and global levels."

He stressed that tourism is often underestimated, but has great potential to help address climate change: “By dedicating this day to tourism, we are taking a step towards addressing climate challenges in this important sector. Tourism is a sector that encompasses almost every aspect of the world. For many developing countries, including small island developing states and developed countries, tourism is a way of life, a critical source of income, and employment. On the other hand, tourism is responsible for a significant share of global greenhouse gas emissions through transport, accommodation, and resource-intensive activities. This sector is also vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.”
