A side event on the environmental consequences of Armenia’s mining activities was held within the framework of COP29, APA reports.
The Environmental Protection First (EPF) Coalition organized the side event on “The Environmental Impact of Armenia’s Mining Activities on the South Caucasus” within COP29.
The coalition's co-founder and Chairman of the Public Council under the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, Amin Mammadov, stated that the Armenian authorities remain silent on the environmental consequences of mining activities: “They do not respond to appeals from local and international NGOs, and Armenia continues its mining activities in disregard of international environmental norms and standards, not allowing Azerbaijani and international organizations to conduct environmental monitoring at the facilities.”
Coalition members once again called on companies operating in Armenia’s mining industry to make their Environmental Assessment Documents public, especially emphasizing that concealing these documents from the public is unprecedented.
The "Azerbaijani Cartographers" Public Union, a coalition member, presented the topic to the audience using a map titled “Mineral Raw Material Resources of Armenia,” prepared in three languages—Azerbaijani, English, and Armenian. The map contains significant information exposing the negative environmental impacts of Armenia’s mining industry activities.
Chairman of the "Azerbaijani Cartographers" Public Union, Mugabil Bayramov, noted that the map clearly shows Armenia has deliberately concentrated its most environmentally harmful mining facilities primarily in the Western Zangazur region, near the transboundary rivers along the border with the Republic of Azerbaijan.
The event demanded that Armenia immediately cease its environmentally harmful activities and fulfill its obligations under international conventions.
