Russian ministry warns about chemical threat as Ukraine plant shelled

Baku-APA. The Russian Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment expresses concerns over a potential environmental threat to Russia from the shelling of a chemical plant in Horlivka in the eastern Ukrainian Donetsk region, bordering on Russia, APA reports quoting ITAR-TASS.

The shelling of Stirol plant, which was nearly hit on August 10, could have “trans-border” consequences, the ministry press service said. It also reported that Deputy Minister Renat Gizatulin had sent an official inquiry to the Ukrainian Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, asking that measures be taken to prevent a possible negative impact on the region’s environment”.

Minister Sergei Donskoy said the situation around the chemical plant, where about 10,000 tons of hazardous waste are reportedly stored, once again highlighted the issue of “ecological safety and protection of such enterprises”.

“I am confident that even at most crucial moments, no chemical, oil, gas or any other high-hazard enterprise should become a token money for the accomplishment of one’s own goals,” the minister said.
