The rejection of Armenia's draft new Constitution in a referendum could create a new political situation in the country and give the opposition a stronger argument for demanding the government's resignation, Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Ruben Rubinyan told journalists, APA reports.
According to him, Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan's suggestion of the possibility of the government's resignation if the draft new Constitution is rejected in a referendum is not a scenario agreed upon within the ruling party.
"Let them give it a chance, let the people decide. If the people decide that it is not necessary, I think this will mean a new political situation. This could also have negative consequences for us, because they will be able to claim that the people are against our main political commitment," Rubinyan noted.
The Armenian Speaker said that in such a case, the opposition would have a more compelling argument for demanding the government's resignation.
It should be noted that on October 28, during a question-and-answer session with government members in the Armenian Parliament, Ararat Mirzoyan called on the opposition to support putting the draft new Constitution to a referendum. He also raised the possibility of the government's resignation if the draft is rejected by the people.
