There is increasing discussion about the need for a new military bloc in Europe, including Ukraine, due to the crisis within NATO, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during his speech at a meeting of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly Council, APA’s Moscow bureau reports.
According to him, in a context where the West is increasingly resorting to power politics, the CSTO will not deviate from international law: “We are witnessing a crisis within NATO. Voices from various official sources in Europe about the need to create a new bloc involving the European Union, the United Kingdom, Norway, and Ukraine are becoming louder.”
Lavrov said that threats in Eurasia are significantly increasing and require additional efforts from the CSTO.
He also noted that the crisis in the Middle East will affect the CSTO region as well.
Lavrov emphasized that the crisis in the Gulf, the conflict in Lebanon, the intensifying military operations aimed at further attempts to fragment Syria as a state, and the complete deadlock that further aggravates the tragedy of the Palestinian people in both Gaza and the West Bank will affect the CSTO region.
“This will not bypass our region, as the aftershocks — I have just returned from the international diplomatic conference held in Antalya, and during my participation in this event, in the speeches of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and other participants, there were very serious concerns raised about the consequences of the Gulf crisis not only for the countries of the Arabian Peninsula, but also for the Caspian Sea, the South Caucasus, and Central Asia,” the Russian foreign minister noted.
