Police officer shot dead in Russia’s North Caucasus

An unknown gunman armed with a 9-mm handgun walked into the officer’s house and "fired numerous shots" into the officer, the source said. The 43 year-old victim died immediately.

The source did not say whether the attacker managed to flee or was detained.

Circumstances surrounding the attack and reasons behind the shooting are being investigated at the moment.

Attacks on police and officials are frequent in Russia’s volatile North Caucasus republics as the federal authorities have been clamping down on militant groups while stepping up efforts to boost the local economies.
