US President: Sanctions will never let Iran rebuild

President Donald Trump distinguished between giving Iran US dollars, which he said he will not do, and unfreezing assets, which he said is money that belongs to Iran, APA reports.

“We have taken a lot of their money,” Trump told reporters during a press conference at the G7 summit. “We have taken their money; it’s not our money, it’s their money, and we froze it at a certain point in time. I guess we’re going to have to give it back.”

On sanctions, Trump expressed some leniency toward Iran, provided it agrees to comply with the terms of the deal: “As far as sanctions are concerned, at some point, you know, we have sanctions, which will never let them rebuild. They would have no money. They would be in poverty.”

Trump repeatedly said the United States would not put any money toward Iran, including in a $300 billion reconstruction fund, unless Iran honors the terms of the agreement — especially on the nuclear issue.

“We’re not doing anything; we’re not putting up money, only if they’re doing things right. If they’re doing things right, if people want to invest, they can invest, but they had this $300 million fund. It’s only $300 million fund; it’s only if they’re doing things right,” Trump said.

Trump defended Vice President JD Vance, claiming the media misreported what he said about the fund.

“That’s the sort of thing they could have access to, funded by the Gulf Coast coalition, so long as they honor their end of the obligation,” Vance told CBS this morning.
