Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who died in an assassination attempt last week, will be awarded the country’s most honorary order, the highest order of the chrysanthemum, APA reports citing the Kyodo Agency.

The Order of the Chrysanthemum on the Ribbon is the highest award for the citizens of Japan, it was awarded both posthumously and during life. In addition to members of the imperial family (the order was established under Emperor Meiji in 1876), 50 people received it.

Abe was assassinated during an election rally on July 8 when Tetsui Yamagami shot him with a homemade gun. Doctors tried to save the politician’s life for several hours, but to no avail. The offender himself later stated that his goal was “a certain organization”, to which his mother gave large donations, thereby actually destroying the family. Yamagami believes that Abe is somehow connected with this association.
