ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is believed to have been killed in a raid conducted by the US military in northwest Syria on Saturday, according to a senior US defense official and a source with knowledge, APA reports citing CNN.
The final confirmation is pending while DNA and biometric testing is conducted, both sources tell CNN.
One official told that al-Baghdadi is believed to have detonated a suicide vest he was wearing as a U.S. special mission unit carried out a ground raid in Idlib. The building containing al-Baghdadi was leveled by U.S. operators, the official said.
U.S. officials said they're awaiting final confirmation of his death through fingerprinting or other biometric methods.
