Gaza – APA. The military operation killing 1300 people in Gaza Strip ended. APA reports quoting Turkish media that Israeli army began to leave Gaza Strip after the declaration of ceasefire. The brief chronology of the military operation, which began at the end of last month and killed 1300 people, is as follows:

2008

December 19 – term of ceasefire agreement signed by HAMAS and Israel expired.

December 24 – HAMAS militants began air strikes on Israeli territory from Gaza Strip.

December 27 - Israel made air strikes on Gaza Strip, at least 229 Palestinians were killed in the aftermath of the bombings.

December 28 – Israel bombed Islamic University of Gaza and underground tunnels used to bring weapons to the region.

December 31 –UN Security Council held an emergency meeting to adopt the resolution calling the parties to ceasefire, but the meeting ended without the voting.

2009

January 1 – a leader of HAMAS Nizar Rayyan was killed in Israel’s bombing.

January 3 – Israeli army entered Gaza Strip with military equipment.

January 4 – Israeli army dividing Gaza into two parts began to assemble a great number of forces and equipment around the city.

January 6 – Israel bombed UN-run school in Jabaliya refugee camp, where the Palestinians were hiding. 42 were killed in the bombing. Multilateral diplomatic efforts aiming to prevent the conflict and declare ceasefire continued.

January 7 – Israel agreed to ceasefire plan proposed by Egypt and France.

January 8 – Air strikes made on Israel from the territory of Lebanon, Israel answered these strikes by artillery shot. UN Security Council adopted resolution calling for urgent ceasefire in Gaza Strip. US abstained in the voting. The worker of United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), who was driving a supply truck into Gaza, was killed and UNRWA stopped aid.

January 9 – Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert rejected the demand of the UN Security Council.

January 10 – political leader of HAMAS Khaled Mashaal accused Israel of committing genocide.

January 11 – Israeli soldiers approached the densely populated part of Gaza.

January 12 – Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni passed a decision not to enter the center of the city.

January 14 – One more air strike made on Israel from Lebanon. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon left for the Near East to achieve ceasefire.

January 15 – Israeli army moved forward in Gaza and made a strong artillery shot. The army also bombed UNRWA building and building of journalists.

January 17 – Israel declared unilateral ceasefire.

January 18 – HAMAS and other Palestinian groups in the region also declared ceasefire and gave a week to Israel to withdraw its troops from Gaza Strip.
