Indonesia quake: low risk of a tsunami
# 09 August 2007 09:01 (UTC +04:00)
A powerful earthquake rattled tall buildings in Indonesia’s capital, where residents said homes and other structures were shaking violently.
The U.S. geological survey said the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.5 and was centered about 66 miles east of Jakarta at a depth of 180 miles.
Because of the earthquake’s depth, there was little risk of a tsunami, said Victor Sardina, of the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in the U.S. state of Hawaii. He added it could produce a huge amount of structural damage because of its power.
The quake took place at 12:05 a.m. local time on Thursday (6:05 p.m. British time on Wednesday). Its epicenter was 112 km (70 miles) from Jakarta. /APA/
