UNICEF to help displaced women, children of Syria

Baku-APA.The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) on Friday unveiled a plan to address the urgent health, education and other needs of the tens of thousands of displaced Syrian women and children, a UN spokesman told reporters here, APA reports quoting .

According to reports by UNICEF regional director for the Middle East and North Africa Maria Calivis, children have not been spared the "violence sweeping Syria over the past year," UN spokesman Eduardo del Buey said at a daily news briefing.

At least 500 children have been killed in Syria, while hundreds more have been injured, detained and abused, the United Nations said. In addition, schools have closed or become too dangerous to access.

"Of the 30,000 registered refugees who have fled to the neighboring countries of Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey, a large proportion are women and children," said del Buey.

According to UN reports, UNICEF has mobilized resources to help those displaced, and is requesting 7.4 million U.S. dollars in funding to further focus on child protection, water and sanitation, and education for the increasing number of refugees.
