Kim Jong Il died at the age of 69 on December 17. KCNA news agency reported that he suffered a heart attack due to physical and mental over-work. He was on his train, travelling to offer "field guidance" to workers, when he died.
In 2008 some news agencies reported that Kim Jong Il had a stroke and was in critical condition.
According to Reuters, he is believed to have anointed the youngest, Kim Jong-un, to succeed him.
Kim Jong Il will be buried in Pyongyang on December 28.
