Baku-APA. Iraq supports Syria’s process of reforms, its security and stability, Iraqi President Jalal Talabani said Tuesday in a message to his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad on developments in Syria and the region, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

The message was handed over to al-Assad by Talabani’s envoy Adel Abdul-Mahdi during a meeting held in Syrian capital of Damascus on Tuesday. The talks focused on recent developments in the region and in Iraq particularly, according to SANA.

SANA, meanwhile, said Assad held talks with Lebanese minister of water and energy Gibran Bassil on the situation in Lebanon following the recent formation of a Lebanese government, in addition to the situation in Syria and the region.

Syria has been in unrest since mid March when anti-government protests broke out in the southern province of Daraa and spread to other cities. The Syrian authorities blamed the unrest on "armed groups and foreign conspiracy" and stressed that it would track down gunmen who have intimidated the people and damaged public and private properties.

According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, as many as 1,483 civilians are now confirmed dead since mid-March.
