Baku-APA. At least one passerby died of gunshot wound and several others were injured on Tuesday when police forces used live ammunition and tear gas to disperse a march of thousands of protesters in Yemen’s southern Taiz Province, local police official and witnesses said, APA reports quoting Xinhua News Agency.

Police opened fire and used tear gas canisters to put down the march that moved from the Liberation Square to main streets of Taiz to repeat demands of ending the 33-year rule of President Ali Abdullah Saleh, one eyewitness told Xinhua.

"The one who died was not a participant in the protest march, but a passerby named Talat Abdullah Ghalib. He died of a gunshot wound later in the hospital," the official said, requesting anonymity.

The city of Taiz, which is located about 200 km south of Sanaa, also witnessed on Tuesday a massive march in protest against shortages of cooking gas. Witnesses said many residents blocked main roads with their empty gas cylinders.

Saleh, who has already admitted losing control of several provinces, is warning of civil war and national split if he is forced to step aside.

More than 116 demonstrators have been killed in clashes with security forces since late January. There are also fears that the violence could escalate, as the majority of the country’s 23 million people own guns.
