Mahmoud Ahmadinejad wins Iran presidential elections

After the official information was given about the end of the voting and closure of the polling stations, Ahmadinejad’s election campaign announced his victory.

According to the preliminary reports, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won 65 percent of the votes. His main rival, reformer Mirhossein Mousavi gained 32 percent of the votes. The other two candidates gained few votes.

Chairman of the Central Election Commission Kamran Daneshjoo said 35 million voters participated in the elections. It makes up 75-80 percent of the voters.

50 percent of the vote is needed for one of the candidates to win the first round.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has officially announced his victory in the elections. Mirhossein Mousavi claimed that the results of the elections had been rigged, and said he won the elections. He said the activeness of voters was high, though the time of the voting was prolonged, not all the voters participated in the election.

Mousavi’s supporters had a clash with the security forces after the voting ended yesterday. Iranian leadership prohibited protest actions until the results of the elections are officially announced.
