General election in India

In April-May 2009 the people of India will participate in general elections to choose 543 members of the 15th Lok Sabha (the House of the People of the Indian Parliament) in free and fair elections, Indian embassy in Azerbaijan told APA. General Elections in India are the largest popular democratic political process in the world. In our country of 1.1 billion people, general elections involve an electorate of 714 million persons, over 828,000 polling stations, 1.37 million electronic voting machines and 5.5 million polling officials. The general elections will take place from April 16 to May 13. 82 percent of voters were already provided with the photo-ID cards. This method is used in India for the first time. Results of the elections will be announced on May 16. Newly-elected Lok Sabha will hold its first meeting until June 2 2009.
