According to CTV, the gunfire erupted shortly after 11:30 a.m. in Vancouver’s Yaletown neighborhood near a Starbucks cafeteria. As policemen arrived at the scene responding to gunfire reports they discovered a seriously wounded 52-year-old male victim.
Police officers exchanged fire with the shooter, who attempted to flee the crime scene riding a bicycle. As a result of the gunfire exchange one of the police officers sustained injuries from shattered glass of her car, which came under fire from the shooter.
The gunman was also seriously injured in the shootout with law enforcers and is currently in a local hospital.
Const. Brian Montague, spokesperson for the Vancouver Police Department, was cited by the CTV as saying that the 61-year-old shooter was in surgery as he “sustained significant injuries but is in stable condition.”
Montague neither disclosed the name of the shooter nor his motives for going on a shooting spree, but said the man was facing weapons-related charges as well as attempted murder charges.
“Depending on the condition of the victim, that could be upgraded, of course,” Montague was quoted as saying by the CTV.
The incident in Vancouver follows a deadly shooting in Canada less than a week ago. Last Wednesday, a 24-year-old gunman opened fire on police officers in Moncton (New Brunswick province), killing three and seriously wounding two more policemen.
