The arrests were made inside the State Capitol building in Madison where protesters were voicing their anger after a federal judge ruled large groups needed permits to gather in the building.

Capitol Police said they arrested 25 people for not having the required permit to demonstrate and another person was arrested for disorderly conduct.

Police posted a handwritten sign in the middle of the Capitol rotunda, warning the demonstrators against gathering in the building. About 60 people resisted and others vowed to return on Thursday.

According to the Wisconsin State Journal, some of the protesters who were arrested were as old as 85.

The demonstrators were taking part in protests held every weekday since Republican Governor Scott Walker signed a controversial law in February, 2011 severely limiting the collective bargaining rights of most public sector unions.

The measure ignited the largest protest movement in the history of Wisconsin. The protests in 2011 and 2012 forced Gov. Walker to face a recall election last year, which he won.
