Baku-APA. Ten people were killed in a clash between rival drug trafficking gangs in northeastern Honduras, the country's Deputy Defense Minister Carlos Funez confirmed Tuesday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

Authorities said 10 drug dealers died in a firefight over a cocaine shipment in Belen, a town in the La Mosquitia region of Honduras' Caribbean coast.

Funez said a drug gang leader, known as "El Muco," was killed in the clash, adding that the body of the Nicaraguan ringleader had been "rescued" by members of his gang around Tuesday dawn and taken to Nicaragua.

Honduras is the main transit route for South American drug transported into the United States. Drug-related crimes have pushed the country's homicide rate to the highest level worldwide.

On May 13, a clash between drug traffickers in La Mosquitia left four people dead and another three injured.

More than 3,000 people have been killed in Honduras in the first half of this year, according to government figures.
