Ban strongly condemns shelling of UN logistics base in Sudan

Baku-APA.UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon on Friday condemned in the strongest terms the shelling of a UN logistics base in Sudan's Kadugli, which killed one Ethiopian peacekeeper and injured two, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

The shelling on Friday struck the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) logistics base in Kadugli, capital of South Kordofan state, said Ban's spokesperson Martin Nesirky, who added that an investigation is under way.

In a statement released here by the spokesman, the UN chief urged the government of Sudan and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM)/northern sector to "immediately suspend hostilities and resume cease-fire negotiations to end the conflict in Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile States."

"The Secretary-General expresses his condolences to the family of the fallen peacekeeper and to the government of Ethiopia," the statement said.

The South Kordofan and Blue Nile states have been witnessing armed clashes between the Sudanese army and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM)/northern sector since 2011 after South Sudan's independence.
