The plane, with nearly 300 people on board, was operated by Asiana Airlines. According to CNN affiliate KTVU, two people died and 61 sought medical assistance after the accident. Fox News said the injuries were caused by fire and smoke.
A photograph from the scene posted to Twitter shows what appear to be passengers walking off the plane, some of them carrying their bags.
The plane is lying on its belly, with the tail missing and no landing gear visible. Evacuation slides are seen extending from one side of the aircraft.
A video from KTVU shows that the top of the aircraft is charred and is missing in some spots.
The airport was closed for departures, Fox News said.
