The U.S. Department of Energy has allocated a total of $2.7 billion to three companies to develop uranium enrichment capacity in the country. This was announced in a statement released by the department, APA reports.
The document notes that the funds were allocated for "the development of uranium enrichment capacity in the country over the next 10 years." US authorities hope this will "strengthen energy security and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers."
The US Department of Energy has awarded $900 million in orders to develop the relevant capacities in the US to American Centrifuge Operating and General Matter, as well as Orano Federal Services, a US subsidiary of the French concern Orano.
US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the Washington administration is committed to "restoring reliable nuclear fuel supply chains to support <...> existing and future nuclear reactors."
