The United States is against the idea of proposing a concrete way forward in July for Ukraine concerning NATO membership, the Financial Times said on Thursday, citing four unnamed officials allegedly briefed on the talks, APA reports.
At this week's meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels, Poland and the Baltic countries were in favor of offering Kyiv "a political path" to accession during the next NATO summit in Lithuania in July, but the US, Germany and Hungary opposed the proposal, according to the sources. Washington considers short-term assistance to Kyiv, especially ammunition supply, as a priority until Ukraine regains its sovereignty and reportedly thinks membership discussions should only advance after that.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has reportedly threatened NATO leaders that he would not appear at the Vilnius summit unless Kyiv is offered deeper cooperation with the western military alliance.
