During the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Marine Corps, an incident occurred when artillery was fired into the air as part of the event, and one of the shells exploded prematurely, APA reports citing U.S. media.
Fragments from the shell landed on two vehicles in the motorcade of U.S. Vice President James David Vance.
No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
The "Interstate 5" highway, where the incident took place, was closed by the California Highway Patrol.
California Governor Gavin Newsom described the act of firing artillery over a busy highway as “dangerous.”
The U.S. Vice President’s office, however, criticized the governor's remarks and defended the event, stating that the celebration was organized in full compliance with safety protocols.
