UN secretary-general requests Peru to expand achievements to indigenous people

Baku-APA. Visiting United Nations (UN) secretary-general Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday urged Peruvian President Alan Garcia and the one to replace him, to expand the achievements on economy growth to the indigenous people, APA reports quoting Xinhua News AGency.

"Here in Peru and other countries of the region, the rights of the indigenous people continue being an issue to be worried about, " Ban said during a press conference at the Government Palace in Lima.

Ban said that for the UN it is very important to fulfill the legitimate aspiration of these people through a consultation and their participation.

Before this, Ban had congratulated Garcia and his government for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, mainly at the child mortality rate, education and gender equality.

Now, Peru’s challenge is to "spread these achievements in the same way to all the vulnerable people mainly in the rural areas, where most of the indigenous people live," Ban told Garcia.

Ban began his fourth official visit to Peru on Tuesday morning, which will wind up on Wednesday.
