Six dead in church-van accident on New York thruway

Baku-APA. A church van crashed on Saturday killing six people and injuring another eight persons on the New York State Thruway in the Town of Woodbury, in upstate Orange County, New York, police said, APA reports quoting Xinhua News Agency.

A New York State Thruway Police spokesman in Albany told Xinhua the single vehicle accident occurred northbound at the 50 mile marker on Interstate 87 about an hour’s drive north of New York City at 3 p.m. EDT. Early reports said the van was struck by a tractor-trailer.

Six people in the church van were killed, he said.

"Three helicopters were used to medevac the injured," State Trooper Jeffrey Salatel in Albany told Xinhua. He said the van rolled over.

Entrance/exits 16 and 17 were closed and traffic rerouted around the heavily traveled section of the New York State Thruway in the region of the popular Woodbury Commons shopping mall.
