Baku-APA. U.S. President Barack Obama on Thursday "strongly condemned" a terrorist attack in the southern Russian republic of North Ossetia, which has claimed at least 16 lives and injured more than 100 others, APA reports quoting Xinhua News Agency.

"This bombing further underscores the resolve of the United States and Russia to work together in combating terrorism and protecting our people," Obama said in a statement released by the White House. "We offer our deepest condolences, and stand with the people of Russia in this time of tragedy."

A powerful explosion ripped through the central market in Vladikavkaz city in North Ossetia on Thursday morning. Many of the injured were in critical condition.

North Ossetia and its neighboring Dagestan and Chechnya have witnessed increasing violence in recent years. Both Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin have vowed to fight and curb terrorism there.

"Our hearts go out to the people of North Ossetia, who have already suffered so much from horrific acts of terrorism," Obama said.
