Baku – APA. U.S. President Barack Obama and the Dalai Lama discussed the need to promote peace, humanitarian values and religious harmony, the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader said on Thursday, APA reports citing Reuters.

Obama’s meeting with the Dalai Lama at White House prompted a warning from China that Sino-U.S. ties could be damaged.

The talks were closed to the press but afterward, the Dalai Lama told reporters he had expressed to Obama his admiration for the United States as a "champion of democracy, freedom, human values" and creativity.

In a statement, the White House said Obama and the Dalai Lama agreed on the importance of a cooperative U.S.-China relationship. Obama urged a direct dialogue between China and Tibet, the statement said.
