US to house Haiti’s quake victims at Guantanamo

Baku. Ziya Agazade â€“ APA. The United States is erecting tents around its military base on the leased Cuban territories of Guantanamo Bay for the relocation of thousands of Haiti’s quake migrants, though it has officially stopped functioning recently.

The United States has already set up around 100 tents and intends to add another 1000 if encountered with larger-than-expected number of Haitians, APA reported quoting US military official Rear Admiral Thomas Copemanâ€™s interview to Washington Post on Wednesday.

The Haitian refugees are to be transferred to the notorious Guantanamo prison where around 200 so-called ’terrorism suspects’ are being held.

The US says the waterway separating the detention facilities and the tents will impede Haitians’ possible contact with the prisoners.

The United States is using the base in southeastern Cuba to transport supplies and personnel to Haiti, over 350 kilometers away.
