Haiti death toll tops 75,000

Baku-APA. The number of people killed in last week’s devastating Haitian earthquake has risen to 75,000, while 250,000 were injured and a million left homeless, the Haitian government said yesterday, APA reports. The updated figures were contained in an statement issued by Haiti’s civil defence department, which said the beleaguered Caribbean nation is in desperate need of temporary shelters, water, food, medical supplies and counselors.One week ago, Haiti was hit by a massive 7.0-magnitude quake which shattered homes and buried citizens under tonnes of rubble across a broad area around the capital Port au Prince.The statement said half of the buildings in the region had been destroyed.The United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti, hard hit by the devastating earthquake, will boost its civilian and military staff from 11,000 to 14,500.With an annual budget of 500 million dollars, MINUSTAH, as it is known, will be getting an extra 3,500 peacekeepers for at least six months. That will take its total staff up to 12,500: 8,940 military and 3,711 police.
