Haitian president says at least 30 000 died in quake

He said he had received reports of death tolls ranging from 30,000 to 100,000, but it was still too early to know the exact number. “Parliament has collapsed. The tax office has collapsed. Schools have collapsed. Hospitals have collapsed, Presidential Palace and residence also collapsed”, said the president.

Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive said earlier that death toll could be over 100 000 people. He said there were many people still missing under ruins and they couldn’t be rescued in time because lack of rescuers. The quake hit Haiti on January 12 registered 7 on the Richter scale and later aftershocks as strong as 5.5 was felt throughout the area.
