Baku. Lachin Sultanova –APA. The tiny Pacific nation of Palau has agreed to temporarily resettle up to 17 China-born Uighur detainees from the US detention centre at Guantanamo Bay, Palau President Johnson Toribiong said, APA reports.
The US federal court passed decision in 2008 to release those detainees because of their non-dangerous behavior, but the appeal court delayed its fulfillment. The appeal court said the Uighurs couldn’t stay in the United States or repatriate to China, because their lives will be threatened in China. Obama administration asked the government of Palau last week to resettle the Uighurs and promised to allocate 2000 million dollars to Palau. President Obama said the Guantanamo detention center would be closed until January 2009. Some of the detainees will be charged by the federal and military courts of the United States. Others will be released or resettled to other countries.
