Fourteen people were killed when a passenger van they were travelling in crashed into an oncoming truck carrying sand in the central Ugandan district of Kalungu on Monday night, police said Tuesday, Xinhua reports.
The head-on collision occurred along the Kampala-Masaka Highway, Michael Kananura, spokesperson for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, said in a statement, adding that four people -- two from each vehicle -- sustained injuries and were rushed to hospital for treatment.
Local police have launched investigations into the accident.
The truck driver reportedly fled the scene, and efforts to track and arrest him are underway, the statement said.
Road crashes remain a major public safety concern in Uganda, with authorities attributing many accidents to poor roads, mechanical defects and reckless driving, such as speeding and dangerous overtaking.
