Baku – APA. Guinea-Bissau’s Prime Minister, Carlos Gomes Junior, has vowed to remain in office in the wake of his arrest by the country’s military. APA reports quoting CCTV that Gomes insists he was elected democratically.

The Prime Minister said that the West African nation has remained stable despite the political turmoil. He added that institutions will soon return to their normal functions.

Mutinous soldiers placed Gomes under house arrest briefly in an apparent coup attempt. They also deposed the head of the armed forces. But a military statement denied their action was an attempt to overthrow the government.

President Malam Bacai Sanha said he would try to mediate in the dispute within the military.
