Chairman of the Committee on social policy of the Parliament of Azerbaijan Hadi Rajabli told APA.
Rajabli said family problems are always in the spotlight of the state, adding that over the last 5 years the parliament has made annexes and amendments to several articles of the Family Code.
“Just one article, the question of compulsory medical examination of coupes wishing to marry, was extensively discussed. 170,000 children are born in Azerbaijan every year. When couples get married without being aware of their diseases, their babies too are born diseased. If couples are diseased, their babies will definitely be born diseased. What makes things difficult is the secrecy of information about the sides’ health as international contracts forbid the revelation of information in this regard. However, the laws of Turkey and other countries require the sides going to marry to inform each other about their health conditions,” he said.
Rajabli also spoke about maternal and child deaths during childbirths.
“Children are born with thalassemia and hemophilia. The Ministry of Health and Cabinet of Ministers have adopted special documents in this regard. Every year, about 200 children are born with thalassemia while 300 children are born with hemophilia in Azerbaijan. Theie consequences are leading to disability. Today science is developing and medical examination allows a woman to give birth to a healthy child,” he added.
