Azerbaijan’s economy has grown more than threefold over the last 15 years, the country’s Deputy Prime Minister, Ali Ahmadov, said on Tuesday.

Azerbaijan is one of the few countries which have attainted the highest level of development within the framework of the Millennium Development Goals, said the deputy PM, addressing a sub-regional workshop on data and statistics for sustainable development goals (SDGs) for high-level official statisticians, APA reported.

He noted that over the course of these years the poverty rate in Azerbaijan has dropped from 50% to 5% — which is a nine-fold decline.

Over the past decade, 1.6 million jobs have been created in Azerbaijan, he added.

Ahmadov mentioned that Azerbaijan is currently a member of the UN Sustainable Development Goals programme.

“Azerbaijan is an oil-exporting country. However, Azerbaijan is carrying out reforms to reduce dependence on oil. We’re hopeful that Azerbaijan will successfully realize it,” he said.
