Committee chairperson: There are 2,600,000 children in Azerbaijan

Although children in Azerbaijan are provided with care from the state and society, it has not been possible so far to ensure for a number of them—refugee and IDP children—the right of living freely in their homeland,” said Chairperson of the State Committee of Azerbaijan for Family, Women and Children Affairs Hijran Huseynova.

She made the remarks at a meeting of the PACE Committee on Social Affairs, Health and Sustainable Development in Baku June 1, APA reported.

Huseynova noted that 193 children were massacred during the Azerbaijan-Armenia conflict and hundreds more were wounded.

“Our state has been able to have 210 children freed from captivity and hostage, 61 went missing, and 27 are still in captivity,” she said.

Over the past period, 32 children have been victims of Armenian terror, stressed Huseynova. “Of them, 13 were killed and 19 others were wounded,” she said.

The committee chairperson noted that more than 3,000 secondary schools, medical institutions, 40 Olympic and youth centers have been built in Azerbaijan in recent years.

“Azerbaijan adopted important laws to strengthen the rights of children. Among them, we can note the law increasing the marriage age from 17 to 18 years,” she added.

There are 2,600,000 children in Azerbaijan, according to the committee chairperson.
