Azerbaijan to sack teachers with poor indicators of diagnostic assessment

Approximately 140,000 teachers have undergone diagnostic assessment in Azerbaijan, Education Ministry spokesman Jasarat Valehov said Friday, APA reported.

He noted that the last 7,000 teachers are currently being assessed.

According to him, the purpose is to select qualified ones and have them involved in the teaching environment.

Valehov noted that some data on the assessment results are already available at the Ministry of Education.

The ministry spokesman added that some of teachers with insufficient results will be trained again and given another opportunity to improve their skills, while others whose results are extremely low will be fired.

“There is no other way. We want qualified teachers in our teaching environment. There were a record number of job applicants last year. Of them, 30,000 sat the exam. There are more vacancies available this year. New opportunities are being provided for qualified teachers to be employed,” he said.

The ministry official noted that this year there will be enough vacancies in the competition on recruitment of teachers: “It is good that there will be more than 6,000 vacancies for teachers this year. The main purpose is to involve more young and talented teachers in employment.”

Deputy Head of the Education Ministry’s Human Resources Department Eshgi Baghirov added that in some cases, the professionalism of teachers will be increased through training.

“However, even though the demands for trainings were met, it is inappropriate to recruit he teachers whose assessment results are low. Instructions have been given regarding such teachers and regulation of labor contract. We don’t want our children and students to be educated by the teachers who showed poor results. New vacancies will be announced even if there are few hours. Thus, the candidates who collected enough points in competitions couldn’t be recruited as there were no vacancies at schools”, he said.

Baghirov stressed that the number of teachers with low indicators of diagnostic assessment is much enough. “Probably, some teachers will be removed from their positions upon their request. We meet such cases as well,” he added.
