Baku. Mubariz Aslanov – APA. Excessive advertisements in foreign languages are an obstacle to development of the Azerbaijani language, MP Aflatun Amashov, who also chairs the Azerbaijani Press Council, said at the parliamentary plenary session on Nov. 29.
“On my way to parliament, I saw ten advertisements and stands giving the names of some stores. Eight of them were in a foreign language and the two were names of a bank and a pharmacy. I am not opposed to acceptance of foreign words because it enriches our language, but we should be more sensitive regarding this issue,” he said.
The MP noted that improvement of the language is out of question since eight out of every ten advertisements are in foreign language.
“We absorb foreign words into our speech, as soil absorbs raindrops. Aren’t we forgetting our language this way? Yes, we are. We are also forgetting our values. It is important to protect the language for the people. Language is the main attribute of the existence of any community as a nation. Remember that it becomes harder and harder to fill these gaps as times passes by. I think it’s high time we started repair these faults. This all is also a requirement of our law because more than 30 state documents on the Azerbaijani language have been approved since we gained independence. The purpose is to protect the purity of the Azerbaijani language and help it develop further as a state language. Therefore, the amendment we are discussing at the moment is very important. We also need to do our best for the issues mentioned in the laws to be implemented,” he added.
