Baku. Konul Kamilgizi – APA. Up to 110,000 people have undergone premarital examination in Azerbaijan since early 2016, said the country’s chief hematologist Chingiz Asadov.
He made the remarks at a conference in Baku Oct. 5, dedicated to the diagnostics, treatment and prevention of hereditary blood diseases.
According to him, the examination found out 3,597 to be carriers of thalassemia, while there are 71 couples who both carry thalassemia.
“12 of these women were pregnant. Only one of fetuses was healthy, 8 were diagnosed with thalassemia and other 3 fetuses were ill. Three women went through a medical abortion. 59 of couples refused to marry,” Asadov added.
The chief hematologist noted that special vehicles are being used for the delivery to Baku blood tests taken in the district and city medical facilities, dismissing the possibility of tests tubes mix-up.
