Today marks the fifth anniversary of the liberation of Fuzuli city, APA reports.
As part of Azerbaijan’s counteroffensive launched on September 27, 2020, Fuzuli city was freed from Armenian occupation on October 17, 2020. In the course of the operation, several villages in the Fuzuli district were also liberated. The President of Azerbaijan, Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Ilham Aliyev, conveyed the news of the liberation of Fuzuli city from occupation on October 17 in his address to the people.
In his address, the president announced that along with the city of Fuzuli, the villages of Gochahmadli, Juvarli, Pirahmadli, Musabayli, Chiman, Isigli, and Dadali of the Fuzuli district were liberated from occupation. Fierce battles took place, with the Azerbaijani army overcoming enemy resistance, forcing Armenian forces to retreat, and inflicting heavy losses on personnel and equipment.
A medal “For the Liberation of Fuzuli” has been established in the Republic of Azerbaijan. By an Order of President Ilham Aliyev, military personnel who participated in the combat operations for the liberation of Fuzuli district and demonstrated personal bravery and courage were awarded the “For the Liberation of Fuzuli” medal.
By the Order signed by President Ilham Aliyev, October 17 has been established as Fuzuli City Day.
Resettlement to Fuzuli city, the next destination in the “Great Return” to the liberated territories, continues.
Recall that the Fuzuli district was occupied by the Armed Forces of Armenia on August 23, 1993. During the occupation, Armenian forces destroyed Füzuli city and the district’s villages, committing acts of vandalism against religious, historical, and cultural monuments, cemeteries, as well as the natural environment.
