Takhtakorpu Reservoir plays key role in Azerbaijan’s water security - PHOTO

The Takhtakorpu Reservoir, located in the Shabran district, is one of the key hydraulic engineering facilities of strategic importance for the management of the country's water resources and the development of agriculture, APA’s Northern Bureau correspondent reports.

The reservoir, which has a total storage capacity of more than 268 million cubic meters, was commissioned in 2013. Built to regulate the waters of the Samur River, the facility serves both the irrigation of agricultural lands and the improvement of drinking water supply.

Nizam Mukhtarov, Chief Engineer of the Samur-Absheron Canal Operations Department, said that the reconstruction of the Samur-Absheron Complex began in 2006. As a result of the projects implemented, the total length of the canal system has been extended to approximately 400 kilometers.

According to him, the Takhtakorpu Reservoir collects water not only from the Samur River but also from the Gusarchay, Gudyalchay, Garachay, Jaghajugchay and Velvelechay rivers. Currently, the reservoir contains approximately 266 million cubic meters of water reserves.

The chief engineer noted that the Takhtakorpu Reservoir has played an important role in ensuring the drinking water supply of Baku and the Absheron Peninsula, particularly during drought years. During the drought periods observed in 2014, 2017, 2019, 2020 and 2021, the reservoir was of particular importance in preventing serious problems in the capital’s water supply.

According to the information, the reservoir does not serve only for the accumulation of water resources. Electricity is also generated through the Hydroelectric Power Plant operating there. The dam is 142.5 meters high and 1,180 meters long.

Safety measures at the Takhtakorpu Reservoir are also kept under special supervision. To monitor the technical condition of the dam, 79 electronic piezometric sensors have been installed. The data received from these devices are analyzed daily, and the condition of the dam is kept under constant monitoring.

Experts believe that the protection of water resources, the creation of new water infrastructure, and the expansion of modern irrigation systems will play an important role in ensuring the country's water and food security.
